
Regent’s University is London’s only independent, not-for-profit university, with a highly cosmopolitan community-based in royal Regent’s Park and Marylebone.
Client Objectives
One of Regent’s University London’s main goals was to review, renew and consolidate its waste management programme across the university premises. The University was keen to improve and extend waste reporting and recycling across both campuses.
Furthermore, they were looking at assessing its current energy performance and set new targets to become more energy-efficient while reducing costs.
Business Challenges
The business challenges Regent’s University had to overcome were:
- Combination of residential and non-residential waste streams across a disparate range of sites
- Strict adherence to Regent’s Park regulations governing conservation and preservation of the environment
- Vehicle size and weight limits restrict access
- Set up a data collection system across multiple sites
- Communicate environmental agenda amongst staff and students
Green Element Approach
We conducted a full waste management audit, including waste streams and sites. To better understand barriers and concerns, we conducted a student survey and interviewed staff. Green Element team project managed the procurement process and drew up a recommendation for a new contractor.
Our approach to achieving energy efficiency included:
- Improving the Environmental Management System
- Create bespoke sustainability policies
- Calculate key environmental performance indicators and carbon footprint and set suitable energy/carbon reduction targets for the different sites.
- Produce online content to communicate an environmental agenda to students and staff
Client Benefits
Regent’s University London attained the international recognise ISO 14001 standard which helped achieve a cost savings of £24,000 every year. The university also attained the Energy Management System IS0 50001 certification and set up an accurate and efficient data collection system across sites.
They achieved savings of 500 tonnes of carbon emissions and 160,000 kWh of energy, as well as best practice compliance with environmental legislation.
