Episode 011: Interview with Catherine Farrant from Ossa Organic
Gut healing is reemerging as the key benefit to having better health, and a longer and happier life. When Catherine Farrant fell pregnant, she started researching on ancient ways in which people nourished their bodies. She found out that food was used as medicine as opposed to today where we’re taking medicine as food and that’s how Ossa Organic was born. Ossa Organic is a BCorp Certified company that has products made using high-quality organic ingredients based on ancient recipes. Catherine shares with us how she runs the company, what inspired her to start it, and ways in which you too, can join the organic foods movement.

What is your business superpower?
At the moment, our supply chain. I’m proud to be announced as the BCorp best for the world honorary in the environment category. This means I’m one of only two BCorps in the UK that meet a certain criteria in the environmental space that is sustainable, exceptionally high quality, and that is set with care for the environment in mind. Our supply chain is run on renewable energy and we upcycle bones as long as they meet our criteria.
How does Ossa Organic engage its staff, suppliers, and customers with its mission and purpose?
I say build on a mission which is to re-educate people on the power of storage of foods, enable people to nurture healing of their bodies by incorporating this into their daily lives. We try and only work with suppliers that get that.
We would change relationships before we thought of compromising our mission. We work together with our suppliers to reduce waste and promote the use of renewable energy and we encourage them to look at the BCorp credentials and help raise themselves to that level. On a regular, we visit our suppliers to look at the way they’re doing things and the way that they speak. Are they looking for just profit or people, product and profit? We engage with like-minded people and I think that’s what makes the world go around.
If you could offer ONE piece of advice to our listeners which could help them with their purpose, what would it be?
Be clearer and realistic with your purpose. We do have exceptionally high standards that can sometimes be debilitating but you have to understand that your mission isn’t always going to be 100%. As long as you have a vision for the endgame for what it is you’re trying to achieve, you will be successful.
Also, remember that we’re functioning in 2018 and in our minds BCorp are 20-30 years ahead of the curve. So we are still in a commercial environment that has ages that are so sharp to BCorps. If you try and push much against that and you stall yourself in your mission, it can be a problem. Be a bit more open-minded and realize the world you’re working in.
Can you tell us how you approach environmental management and your carbon footprints?
I’m very conscious about carbon footprint in our daily lives at home with the family and I always say Ossa Organic is a family-run business and we live the brand at home as well. It was very easy for me to build that thought process into a business.
We’re a fresh product which means we don’t have a long shelf life so we are very conscious of our delivery and we go as green as possible. The production facility is being set up with renewable energy and our office is run on green energy. At the moment, we encourage a lot of remote working and a lot of use of digital technology to limit carbon footprint in literal travel or transport times.
