C&K Meats Objectives
As an ethical, forward-thinking meat producer and abattoir, C&K Meats wanted to reduce its carbon footprint and impact on the environment.
Its aim was to be energy efficient and achieve environmental accreditation. Reducing energy bills was another factor, using more cost effective traditional means and alternative energy where possible.
C&K Meats long-term objective is to go off-grid, producing all its own energy on which to run the business. Not only would this allow the company to comply with future environmental legislation it would also enhance its reputation for corporate sustainability.
C&K Meats faced a number of challenges. Firstly, it needed to heat the slaughter hall in the cold months as well as eliminate condensation.
It also needed to find more energy efficient methods to heat the offices, rather than the current gas system and to reduce the amount of waste that was going to landfill.
Getting all staff onboard with energy efficiency and environmental awareness was paramount too. To gain full benefit from the initiatives it would require everyone to take the project seriously and to recognise the positive impact that it would have on the company, the wider community and the surroundings.

Green Element's Approach
C&K Meats were very proactive, having already implemented rain water harvesting and refrigeration waste heat recovery systems to heat water and the slaughter hall.
Next, air conditioning was installed in offices, which could be used during winter for heating. Staff training encouraged everyone to turn off appliances when not in use and to recycle wherever possible.
C&K Meats where then advised to invest in new delivery transport to reduce fuel consumption, and training was later provided to drivers.
Attention then turned to renewables – something which C&K Meats was keen to invest in. A 150kW peak solar electricity system was installed and all high bay or flood lighting was changed to LEDs which resulted in huge energy savings.
A renewable energy audit, which also looked at water recycling as well as potential changes to office heating and a lairage roof, provided opportunities for further improvements over time.
Today, C&K Meats saves £6,778 year-on-year and remains as committed as ever to the Climate Change Agreement and its environmental ethos. It generated 318,934 kWh of solar energy throughout 2016/17, saving £34,726.
The air conditioning system is proving more energy efficient than the previous gas-based system to heat the office building. Additional energy efficiency measures are being sought to further reduce consumption.
Having grown considerably since it started working with Green Element, the family firm has some incredibly ambitious and innovative plans up its sleeve. As it continues to reduce its overall footprint, C&K Meats is looking to invest millions into an anaerobic digestion plant to break down biodegradable materials.
This alone would consume the majority of its waste products, converting it into a valuable agricultural fertiliser with minimal COD. It would also provide a high proportion of the on-site energy supply for electricity and heat, and place C&K Meats at the leading edge of innovation in its industry.
