The  Harrington Scheme is a charity run by local teachers and volunteers for young adults with learning difficulties. The project is focused on learners being safe and independent.  It is a day college where young adults can work towards qualifications.

This month I spent a day with The Harrington Scheme helping to plan lessons focused on environmental awareness. I sat down with other teachers and volunteers and we came up with different ideas. Our aim was to create workshops highlighting; what recycling is, why it is important to recycle and what we can do in our everyday lives to help.

We collected pictures of plastics in the ocean and outlined global statistics to share with learners.

It is imperative that the language used in sessions is tailored towards Harrington’s learners. The messages must be conveyed in a clear manner that is easy to understand.  To facilitate learning we have planned various activities. For example, I will bring in physical items and learners will guess which bin they need to go. I will have examples of the bins at the front of the class too. This will make the sessions visual.

I will try my best to use Makaton (sign-language) where possible or have someone in the class who can use it fluently to assist.

Another idea was to arrange a trip to a recycling facility for the learners.

This month I really enjoyed discovering the art of meticulous lesson planning and helping to give my environmental expertise.

Next month I will deliver this environmental awareness session for leaners. I can’t wait!
