Sustainable Construction Projects > August 2006
Project 2: Produce an ecological environmental impact of a new build residential development within the Snowdonia National Park.
Objectives
- Where to source products for building development.
- All the products used have to have no or very little impact on the environment.
- The development has to have "off the grid" running water and energy.
Approach and Deliverables
- Undertook an environmental audit of the premises.
- Understood the legal implications of building the log cabin on National Trust land and advised on the planning implications.
- Designed a hot water system in order for the inhabitants to have on tap hot water, heated from the sun.
- Advised on how to build a reed bed Loo This Loo cleans it self and leaves no smell.
Results and Business Benefit
- The site utilises the fresh rain water that falls on the site and has a fully integrated 'brown' water system.
- The site utilises new technologies and produces its own renewable energy.
- This report has helped in the planning permission and the client now has a site "off the grid", with relatively little or no impact on the environment.
- The client was keen to establish ways in which environmentally friendly materials could best be used in construction combined with ways of increasing energy efficiency.
- The audit led to changes in the materials specified for the development and identified ways of integrating the production of renewable energy into the development as a whole.
